ANSI B16.5 Class 300 Slip On Flanges

Introduction of slip on flange

Slip on flanges are the most widely used and common type of flange connection in industrial piping systems. Their name originates from the welding method employed—the flange and pipe are joined via a fillet weld, with the flange face remaining parallel to the pipe during welding, hence the term “slip-on.”

How Slip On Flanges Work

The operational principle of a slip-on flange is rooted in its dual-welding mechanism. The flange is first slipped onto the pipe, allowing for initial alignment adjustments. Two fillet welds are then applied: one at the hub-to-pipe interface on the outside and another on the inside where the pipe meets the flange face. This creates a strong, leak-proof connection capable of withstanding system pressure and external loads. The design of the ANSI B16.5 Class 300 slip on flanges ensures sufficient structural integrity for its pressure class, distributing stress effectively through the welded joints and the flange body itself.

Class 300 Slip On Flanges Dimension

ANSI B16.5 slip on Flanges include six classes: Class 150, Class 300, Class 400, Class 600, Class 900, Class 1500.

ASTM A182 F304L Flanges Material

Chemical Properties

ASTM A182 F304L is an austenitic stainless steel forged material for flanges. Its core chemical composition features 18% chromium and 8% nickel, with carbon content controlled below 0.03% to achieve excellent intergranular corrosion resistance. This composition design enables the formation of a stable passivation film in corrosive environments, making it widely used in chemical and food industries.

Mechanical Properties

Regarding mechanical properties, the material standard specifies a minimum tensile strength of 485 MPa and a yield strength of 170 MPa at room temperature. These performance metrics are achieved through solution heat treatment, a process involving heating the material to high temperatures followed by rapid cooling. This results in a uniform austenitic microstructure, ensuring both high strength and good ductility across diverse service conditions.
