A threaded flange is a ring with internal threads and bolt holes. It screws directly onto a pipe for easy, weld-free connections in low-pressure systems like water lines. Its weakness is scientific: the sharp roots of the threads concentrate stress. Under high pressure, vibration, or heat, this can cause cracks or leaks, so it’s avoided in critical applications.

An SAE flange is a stout disc with bolt holes and a precision O-ring groove. Two halves bolt together, trapping and compressing the O-ring in its groove. The science here is smart: system pressure pushes the O-ring deeper into its seat, making the seal tighter as pressure rises. This makes it ideal for high-pressure, leak-proof hydraulic systems in machinery.
