In the complex pipeline systems of modern industry, blind flanges have become an indispensable core component, with their use growing increasingly widespread. Their scientific design, standardized manufacturing, and diverse material options have played a significant role in enhancing the safety and maintainability of pipeline systems, making them widely applied in industries such as petroleum, chemicals, power, and shipping.

What Are Blind Flanges?

Blind Flanges

Blind flanges (BL), also known as flange cover or flange blind plate, are solid flange discs that are installed at the end of a pipeline or at specific locations when paired with a pipeline flange, using bolts to achieve complete sealing or isolation of the pipeline. Its principle lies in utilizing the elastic deformation of the sealing gasket under bolt tightening pressure to fill the microscopic gaps on the flange sealing surface, forming a tight seal layer to prevent the flow of the medium, thereby achieving the purpose of cutting off the pipeline, isolating equipment, or systems.

Blind Flanges Installation Process:

1. Pipe Cleaning

Before installing the blind flange, the pipe connection area must be thoroughly cleaned to remove any residual media, impurities, oil stains, etc., from the pipe. Ensure that the pipe connection surface is clean and free of foreign objects to avoid affecting the sealing effect.

2. Gasket Installation

Accurately place the sealing gasket on the pipe flange sealing surface, ensuring that the gasket is centered and not misaligned or skewed.

3. Blind Flange Installation and Tightening

When tightening bolts, follow the principles of symmetry and gradual tightening. Tighten in 2–3 stages to achieve the specified tightening torque, ensuring even force distribution across the sealing surface and preventing localized leaks.

4. Seal Integrity Inspection

After installation, conduct a seal integrity inspection. Common methods include: air pressure testing, hydraulic testing, and foam testing.

Usage Precautions:

Regular inspection and maintenance are key to ensuring the long-term stable operation of blind flanges during use. The following are several aspects that require special attention when using blind flanges:

Regular Inspection

Check Sealing: Regularly inspect the sealing of blind flanges to ensure that gaskets are not worn, aged, or damaged.

Check Bolt Tightness: Bolts may loosen due to vibration, temperature changes, or pressure fluctuations, so it is important to regularly inspect their tightness.

Corrosion Prevention Measures

For blind flanges exposed to corrosive environments, regularly inspect the surface for signs of corrosion to prevent reduced service life.

Temporary Sealing vs. Long-Term Use

For blind flanges used long-term, regular inspections and maintenance are crucial to ensure they remain in optimal working condition.

Upgrades and Replacements

When the service life of blind flanges or gaskets reaches its limit, they should be replaced promptly to avoid compromising the overall system’s safety and performance.

Application Areas:

•Chemical and petrochemical industry: Blind flanges are commonly used to seal or isolate certain pipeline sections, ensuring that hazardous chemicals do not leak and safeguarding production safety.

Power industry: They are primarily used to seal steam, water, and coolant pipelines, preventing medium leakage and ensuring system stability.

•Aviation and aerospace sector: Blind flange is employed in critical systems such as fuel lines and gas pipelines to ensure flight safety.

Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering: They are used to seal seawater supply pipelines or offshore platform pipelines, preventing seawater ingress or medium leakage, thereby enhancing system reliability.
